Manual Equatorial Telescope Mounts
Manual equatorial mounts for hands-on tracking
A manual equatorial mount lets you follow the sky with slow-motion controls or setting circles, and some models can be upgraded with motor drives. It suits observers who want to locate objects themselves, prefer straightforward mechanics or plan to expand their setup later. This range includes entry-level mounts, sturdier EQ systems and compact camera trackers.
For computerised object finding, compare our EQ GoTo mounts. Another design option is a manual AZ mount.
Choosing a manual equatorial mount
An equatorial mount is set up with its right-ascension axis parallel to Earth's axis. Once polar aligned, the apparent motion of stars can be compensated with one axis. Slow-motion controls support accurate tracking, while setting circles can assist with manual object location. Upgrade options such as motor drives vary by model.
Payload and stability
Include the complete setup in your calculation: telescope tube, finder, eyepieces, camera and accessories. A sturdy tripod and correctly matched counterweights also matter. A compact EQ2 mount may suit lighter instruments. The EQ3-2 or NEQ-5 offers more capacity depending on the version. Check the manufacturer's specifications and the actual package contents for each product.
Setup and polar alignment
Place the tripod on stable ground and level it as well as practical. Then align the polar axis toward the celestial pole. Alignment accuracy affects how long a target remains in the eyepiece or camera frame. A polar scope or compatible electronic aid can simplify the process.
Upgrades and imaging
Some equatorial mounts accept motor drives or GoTo components. Check the exact model version, compatibility, controller and power requirements before ordering upgrades. For computerised object finding, see our EQ GoTo mounts. Compact camera trackers such as the Star Adventurer 2i set are designed for portable camera and lens setups; they are not a substitute for a traditional EQ mount carrying a heavier telescope.
Manual EQ or AZ mount?
A manual EQ mount supports astronomical observing with tracking along one axis. An AZ mount moves intuitively in altitude and direction and is often quick to set up. Consider telescope weight, tracking needs, portability and possible upgrades. Compare the specifications, payload, tripod and included accessories for each model.
