Azimuthal GoTo Mounts

Azimuth GoTo mounts for easy object finding

An azimuth mount moves a telescope horizontally and vertically. After a short alignment, its GoTo system can slew to selected celestial objects and track them across the sky. This category includes compact Wi-Fi mounts for mobile observing, complete tripod setups and larger dual-mode systems that can also operate in azimuth mode. Compare payload capacity, mount weight, control method and included accessories before choosing.

Explore the alternatives: AZ mounts without GoTo and equatorial GoTo mounts.

Choosing the right azimuth GoTo mount

Azimuth mounts are popular for quick setup and straightforward operation. They move the telescope in altitude and azimuth and track the apparent motion of the sky on both axes. Once aligned, GoTo control can locate selected targets and tracking keeps them in the eyepiece field for visual observing. Careful setup and alignment are still essential for accurate pointing.

Check payload and stability

Compare the stated payload with the complete observing load: telescope tube, eyepiece, finder, camera and other accessories. Capacity figures are not always directly comparable between manufacturers or mount types, so a sensible reserve can improve stability while focusing. A suitable tripod, secure clamps and balanced equipment also matter. Compact Wi-Fi models such as the Skywatcher AZ-GTi and Virtuoso GTi emphasize portability and app control. Check the specific version and included mounting hardware.

Control, alignment and power

Systems differ in hand controller, Wi-Fi or app operation, object database and alignment procedure. Check compatibility with your preferred phone or control method, included accessories, and the required batteries or external power supply. Correct location and time settings and alignment according to the manufacturer's instructions are important for reliable pointing.

Azimuth or equatorial operation?

A conventional AZ mount is easy to use and well suited to visual observing and travel. During long-exposure astrophotography, an azimuth mount causes field rotation over time; an equatorial mount with suitable tracking is generally preferred for demanding long-exposure deep-sky imaging. Dual-mode mounts such as the AZ-EQ5GT and AZ-EQ6 can operate in either configuration. Compare capacity for the selected mode and intended use.

Special case: solar observing

The Skywatcher SolarQuest is designed to locate and track the Sun automatically. A telescope must only be used for solar observing with a purpose-made, undamaged solar filter fitted correctly. A mount or GoTo system does not protect your eyes from sunlight.
