Solar Projection Screens and Accessories

White-light solar projection

This category features accessories for projecting a white-light image of the Sun onto a screen. A solar projection screen lets several people observe together and is useful for groups, teaching and public outreach.

Choosing and using solar-projection equipment

A solar-projection setup consists of components matched to one another. You need a refractor suitable for solar projection with a star diagonal or prism, a variable eyepiece-projection adapter with the correct connection, and a heat-resistant glass-and-metal eyepiece. Before ordering, check the required back focus and compatibility with your existing accessories.

The Baader Solar Projection Screen (BSPS) requires approximately 30 mm of back focus. The manufacturer recommends focal ratios of about f/6 or slower and a projected solar disc at least 60 mm in diameter. Telescope focal length, eyepiece and projection distance determine whether the full solar disc or a magnified portion is shown. The projection screen, telescope, diagonal/prism, eyepiece and projection adapter may be separate items; always check the contents of the specific offer.

Solar-projection safety

Use solar projection only with an optical and accessory combination specifically suitable for the purpose and in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Cover or remove finders and other optics before pointing the telescope at the Sun, use heat-resistant components and never leave the setup unattended. A projection screen is not a solar filter for direct viewing through an eyepiece. Never look at the Sun through an unfiltered telescope.
