Cooled Astro Cameras
Cooled astronomy cameras for detailed deep-sky imaging
If you want to photograph galaxies, nebulae and star clusters, low image noise becomes increasingly important as exposure times get longer. This is where cooled astronomy cameras show their strength: active sensor cooling significantly reduces thermal noise. The result is cleaner individual frames and more freedom during later image processing.
Whether you prefer a colour one-shot camera or a monochrome camera for LRGB and narrowband filters, this category includes cooled astronomy cameras from ZWO, Omegon and TS-Optics for different requirements and budgets.
What matters when choosing a camera
The sensor size influences the field of view and therefore the framing of your image. Pixel size and telescope focal length together determine the sampling and the level of detail you can record. It is therefore worth comparing resolution, read noise, full-well capacity and frame rate before making a choice.
Also consider the connection, the required back focus, the power supply and compatibility with your imaging software. With a colour camera, a suitable UV/IR cut filter is often all you need. Monochrome cameras offer more flexibility with a filter wheel and LRGB or narrowband filters, but they also require more time and additional equipment.
Why cooling is useful
Thermal noise increases noticeably during long exposures and at higher ambient temperatures. Regulated cooling keeps the sensor temperature stable and makes your frames easier to compare. It also simplifies the creation of dark frames and other calibration files – an important step when many individual exposures are combined into one clean astrophotograph.
For beginners and experienced imagers
A cooled astronomy camera is an excellent basis for deep-sky imaging, but it is only one part of the system. Accurate tracking, a suitable telescope and precise focusing are equally important.
