Omegon AC 70/900 EQ-1 – refractor for the Moon and planets
The Omegon AC 70/900 EQ-1 is a classic achromatic refractor for getting started in astronomy. Its 70 mm aperture and 900 mm focal length make it a long-focus system with a focal ratio of about f/12.9. This combination is particularly suited to the Moon, brighter planets and double stars. The enclosed refractor tube is quick to set up and does not normally need the regular mirror adjustment required by a Newtonian telescope.
What can you observe?
The Moon is a rewarding target: even at moderate magnification, craters, mountain ranges and changing light-and-shadow boundaries become visible. Jupiter, Saturn and bright double stars are also worth exploring; the amount of visible detail depends on atmospheric steadiness, the object's altitude and careful focusing. Bright star clusters can also be observed. The 70 mm aperture naturally limits views of faint nebulae and galaxies, which appear very subtle visually.
As an achromat, the telescope may show a slight colour fringe around very bright objects at high magnification. Its long focal length supports steady views at higher powers, while giving a narrower field of view than a short-focus wide-field telescope.
Eyepieces and magnification
The 20 mm eyepiece gives approximately 45x magnification and the 10 mm eyepiece about 90x. The supplied 2x Barlow lens can double each magnification. The maximum useful magnification is listed at about 140x, so the calculated 180x with the 10 mm eyepiece and Barlow will not be practical under all conditions. In unsteady air, a lower magnification often gives the sharper view. The 90-degree diagonal mirror directs the eyepiece to a comfortable side-facing position.
EQ-1 mount and operation
The equatorial EQ-1 mount helps track a celestial object along the right ascension axis. For comfortable tracking, roughly align the polar axis with the celestial pole. Slow-motion controls allow small corrections; release the axis locks for larger movements. The set also includes an aluminium tripod and matching counterweight. The mount is manual and does not have GoTo control.
Ready to get started
A finder, diagonal mirror, and 20 mm and 10 mm eyepieces are included. The Barlow lens adds higher calculated magnifications. After assembly, beginners can start with the Moon and bright planets while learning to use an equatorial mount.
