Sky-Watcher StarQuest 102R – a fast refractor for wide fields
The Sky-Watcher StarQuest 102R combines a 102 mm achromatic objective, 500 mm focal length and a lightweight manual equatorial StarQuest mount. Its strength is wide fields and bright, extended objects. The set is easy to transport and suits spontaneous observing, star fields, open clusters and the brightest targets in our solar system.
102 mm wide-field optics
The two-element, air-spaced achromatic objective has an f/4.9 focal ratio. Its short focal length gives a low magnification of 20× with the 25 mm eyepiece, providing a helpful overview of larger areas of sky. The 10 mm eyepiece gives 50× and works well for the Moon and brighter planets. Large star clusters, star fields and some bright nebulae are also attractive targets under a dark sky.
With a fast achromat, a colour fringe around high-contrast, very bright objects is expected and can be more noticeable at high magnification. The StarQuest 102R is therefore especially strong as a rich-field telescope for wide views; a longer-focus or apochromatic instrument is a better choice for the finest planetary detail. Its 102 mm aperture gathers more light than small beginner refractors, but cannot replace a larger instrument for faint galaxies.
Eyepieces and useful magnification
The supplied 25 mm and 10 mm eyepieces provide 20× and 50× magnification. The low power is ideal for locating targets and viewing extended objects. Additional suitable eyepieces can increase magnification for the Moon and bright planets. Sky-Watcher lists 204× as the highest practical power. Treat this as a theoretical upper guideline: atmospheric seeing, target contrast and mount stability determine which magnification will actually give a sharp view on a given night.
StarQuest mount and tracking
The StarQuest is an equatorial mount. Once its polar axis is aligned, the apparent motion of the sky can be compensated mainly with the right-ascension axis. Slow-motion controls help centre and track objects precisely. The mount is manual and has no GoTo system. A tracking motor is available separately and is not included. The stated maximum payload is about 3 kg; the lightweight telescope tube weighs around 2.53 kg. The aluminium tripod is supplied with an accessory tray.
Included equipment and image orientation
The package includes the StarQuest 102R tube, equatorial StarQuest mount with counterweight, aluminium tripod and tray, red-dot finder, a 1.25-inch diagonal, and 25 mm and 10 mm eyepieces. The focuser accepts 2-inch accessories; a 1.25-inch adapter allows use of the supplied eyepieces. The diagonal gives an upright but laterally reversed image. For a correctly oriented upright image when observing nature, an optional Amici prism is required.
Buying advice
The StarQuest 102R is a good choice if you want to see a wide area of sky at once and prefer a lightweight mount with manual tracking. It is particularly suitable for star fields, open clusters, the Moon and bright deep-sky objects. After setup, the equatorial mount follows the motion of the sky with one axis, although learning to align the polar axis takes some initial practice.
For primarily planetary observing at high magnification, a longer-focal-length telescope with better colour correction is usually more suitable. A larger aperture helps with faint galaxies and nebulae. The manual mount is not intended for long-exposure astrophotography; for visual observing, however, this fast 102 mm achromat is a portable all-rounder with a particular strength in wide fields.
