The 5 mm Planetary HR is a short-focal-length eyepiece with relatively comfortable eye relief. It supports high magnification without the very tight viewing position of many classic short-focus eyepieces.

What magnification will it give?

Magnification equals telescope focal length divided by 5 mm. A 1000 mm telescope, for example, gives 200x, which is useful only when the optics and atmospheric seeing support it.

Practical note

Do not choose a 5 mm eyepiece simply to maximise magnification. Under average conditions, a slightly longer focal length often gives a steadier and more detailed image.
