Skywatcher Evostar 90 EQ2 – classic refractor for the Moon and planets
The Skywatcher Evostar 90 EQ2 is an achromatic refractor with a 90 mm aperture and 900 mm focal length. Its long focal length and f/10 focal ratio make it particularly well suited to observing the Moon, planets and double stars. The multi-coated optics support good light transmission and contrast. As a refractor, it is ready to use and does not normally require regular mirror collimation.
Observing with a 90 mm aperture
The Moon reveals many craters, mountain ranges and changing shadows. When the atmosphere is steady, the brighter planets and suitable double stars are rewarding targets. Bright open clusters and a few especially bright nebulae are also within reach. The aperture naturally limits views of faint deep-sky objects: visually, they appear subtle rather than showing the colours and detail of long-exposure astrophotography.
The Evostar 90 is an achromatic refractor. A slight colour fringe may therefore be visible around very bright objects at high magnification. The long focal length supports comfortable observing at medium and higher powers, while actual sharpness always depends on atmospheric steadiness, the object's altitude and accurate focusing.
Eyepieces and magnification
The 25 mm eyepiece provides about 36x magnification and the 10 mm eyepiece about 90x. With the supplied 2x Barlow lens, these become approximately 72x and 180x. Sky-Watcher lists 180x as the maximum magnification. This is an upper guideline for suitable conditions; a somewhat lower power often gives a steadier, more detailed view. The 90-degree diagonal mirror provides a comfortable viewing position when observing objects high in the sky.
Manual equatorial EQ2 mount
The EQ2 is a manual equatorial mount. Flexible slow-motion controls move the telescope precisely in right ascension and declination; release the axis locks for larger movements. Once the polar axis is aligned with the celestial pole, an object can be tracked using the right ascension axis. A motor drive for that axis is optional and is not included in the listed set. The height-adjustable aluminium tripod with accessory tray provides the base for observing.
A complete set for getting started
A finder, diagonal and two eyepieces are included, so observing can begin after assembly. The 2x Barlow lens extends the supplied magnifications, and a camera adapter is included as well. This set is suited to beginners looking for a straightforward refractor on a manual equatorial mount, with an emphasis on the Moon, planets and brighter celestial objects.
