Solar Astronomy – observing, imaging and studying the Sun
This comprehensive book brings together the knowledge of 14 experienced solar observers on viewing, photographing and studying the Sun. It explores filter methods in depth, including Herschel prisms, calcium and H-alpha filters, as well as etalons, blocking filters and double stacking. Current systems and their respective advantages and disadvantages are discussed.
A major section is devoted to imaging: focal-length extension and positioning telecentric systems, capture with DSLR and CMOS cameras, and modern image processing. Hundreds of photographs, graphics and diagrams illustrate the material. Visual observers will also find guidance on drawing in white light and H-alpha. The book is written in accessible English. Solar observing still requires suitable protective filters and strict compliance with the equipment manufacturer’s safety instructions.
