Sky-Watcher Explorer 200P with EQ5 200/1000 Newtonian Telescope

The Sky-Watcher Explorer 200P with EQ5 combines a light-gathering 200 mm Newtonian reflector, 1000 mm focal length and a manual equatorial mount. Its aperture gathers substantially more light than a 150 mm telescope, bringing the Moon and planets into view while also revealing many star clusters, nebulae and galaxies. It is suited to ambitious visual observing and can later be upgraded with optional tracking motors or SynScan GoTo.

Optics and observing

The 200P uses a parabolic primary mirror at f/5. The 1000 mm focal length balances magnification and field of view. The supplied 25 mm and 10 mm eyepieces provide approximately 40x and 100x magnification. The included 2x Barlow lens gives nominal combinations of about 80x and 200x. Useful magnification depends on atmospheric seeing, thermal acclimation and collimation; the manufacturer specifies a maximum useful magnification of 406x.

The primary and secondary mirrors are made from low-expansion borosilicate glass, which changes shape relatively little as temperature varies and helps maintain a stable image while cooling. Sky-Watcher’s RAQ coating is specified by the manufacturer at approximately 94% reflectivity. Thin secondary-mirror supports reduce obstruction and diffraction spikes around bright stars. The dual-fit focuser accepts 1.25-inch and 2-inch accessories and, with a suitable adapter, allows direct attachment of a DSLR camera.

EQ5 mount

The manual EQ5 tracks the sky equatorially. After polar alignment, objects can be followed by turning a single axis; setting circles and slow-motion controls help centre targets. The adjustable stainless-steel tripod includes an accessory tray, level and altitude and azimuth adjustments. Optional motors or a GoTo system can be added later. This package is manual and does not include motors or a hand controller.

Specifications

The 8.8 kg optical tube is within the EQ5’s stated 10 kg visual payload, making this a suitably matched combination. For sharp views at high magnification, allow the telescope to cool and collimate the Newtonian optics when needed. Solar observing requires a securely fitted, purpose-designed front-aperture solar filter; never look at the Sun without one.
