with Goto-Mount
Newtonian reflector telescopes with GoTo combine a light-gathering mirror optical system with a computerised mount. Once aligned, the system helps locate and track selected celestial objects. This category includes compact telescopes for beginners as well as larger Newtonian optics with alt-azimuth or equatorial GoTo mounts.
How does GoTo work on a Newtonian telescope?
A Newtonian reflector uses a primary mirror to collect light and a secondary mirror to direct it to the focuser. A GoTo system adds a motorised mount that slews to selected celestial objects and, depending on the model, tracks them. After setup, the controller must be aligned using the observing location and the sky. Objects can then be selected with a hand controller or an app. GoTo makes finding targets easier, but it does not remove the need for initial alignment.
Alt-azimuth or equatorial GoTo mount?
Alt-azimuth mounts move in altitude and azimuth. They are generally straightforward to use and work well for visual observing. Equatorial mounts are aligned with Earth’s axis and can compensate for the apparent motion of the sky with one axis. This can be useful for extended observing and introductory astrophotography, but setup and polar alignment require more care. Check each product page for the exact mount type and control system supplied.
What aperture suits your observing goals?
Aperture affects light gathering and theoretical resolution. The products in this category currently range from compact 76 mm instruments to Newtonian telescopes with apertures up to 300 mm. Smaller telescopes are often easier to transport and can be a practical starting point. Larger apertures have more potential to show faint deep-sky objects under dark skies, but need a suitable mount, storage space and transport arrangements. Results also depend on sky conditions, location, collimation and thermal acclimatisation.
What should you consider before buying?
- Mount and payload: Check that the mount can support the telescope and planned accessories. Imaging requires a suitable payload margin.
- Controller and alignment: Find out whether operation uses a hand controller or app, what initialisation is needed, and whether Wi-Fi, a smartphone or other components are required.
- Power supply: Motorised GoTo mounts need power. An adapter, battery pack or batteries may be sold separately; check the listed contents.
- Eyepieces and finder: Compare the supplied eyepieces, finder and any required adapters. Magnification is calculated by dividing telescope focal length by eyepiece focal length.
- Setup and transport: Consider tube length, tripod, counterweights and total weight. Larger telescopes need an appropriate observing and storage location.
- Collimation and cooling: Newtonian optics need correct collimation. For demanding observations, allow the optics to adjust to the outdoor temperature.
