Newtonian telescopes without GoTo: find objects and explore for yourself

A Newtonian reflector uses a primary mirror at the rear of the tube and a small secondary mirror to direct light to the focuser at the side. This design offers generous aperture for its price and is well suited to observing the Moon, planets and many deep-sky objects. This category includes compact beginner telescopes as well as Newtonians with apertures up to 200 mm. Specifications and supplied accessories vary by product, so please check each individual product page.

What does “without GoTo” mean?

The mount does not automatically locate celestial objects. You point and move the telescope yourself. An equatorial mount is aligned with the celestial pole and can follow the apparent motion of the sky around one axis. An alt-azimuth mount moves up/down and left/right and is especially intuitive to use. Some sets may include a motor for tracking: a tracking motor is not a GoTo system and does not locate objects automatically.

Choosing aperture and focal length

Aperture determines how much light a telescope can collect and its theoretical ability to resolve fine detail. Larger apertures can reveal more detail and fainter objects under suitable conditions, but usually require more storage space, a sturdier mount and more effort to transport. Magnification depends on telescope focal length and eyepiece focal length: telescope focal length divided by eyepiece focal length. High magnification is not always useful; atmospheric seeing, the target and optical quality set practical limits. A faster focal ratio often provides a wider field of view, while a longer focal length gives higher magnification with the same eyepiece.

Which mount suits you?

  • Alt-azimuth: moves like a camera tripod and is an intuitive choice for visual observing and occasional trips.
  • Equatorial: after polar alignment, an object can be tracked using one axis. Setup takes practice; a motor is included only when the product details explicitly say so.
  • Dobsonian: a simple, stable rocker-box mount for larger Newtonian optics. Browse our Dobsonian telescopes.

Long-exposure astrophotography requires a stable mount, accurate motorised tracking and suitable imaging equipment. A Newtonian telescope without GoTo is not automatically suitable for long-exposure imaging. Check each set’s tracking capability, payload rating and accessories before purchasing.

What to consider before buying

  • Observing interests: the Moon and planets benefit from a steady, precise setup; a wide field of view is useful for large star fields and many deep-sky objects.
  • Location and transport: consider tube length, total weight, storage space and time for the optics to adjust to the outdoor temperature.
  • What is included: compare eyepieces, finder, tripod, counterweights, motor, adapters and power supply. These items vary between sets.
  • Collimation: Newtonian optics may occasionally need mirror alignment. Correct collimation supports image quality; how often it is needed depends on transport and use.

Looking for automatic object location? See our Newtonian telescopes with GoTo. If you already own a suitable mount, an optical tube assembly without a mount may be an option. Always compare aperture, focal length, mount and the exact supplied accessories for each product.
