Sky-Watcher Skyhawk 114 EQ1 114/1000 Newtonian Telescope

The Sky-Watcher Skyhawk 114 EQ1 combines a 114 mm optical system with a manual equatorial mount. Its catadioptric Newtonian design folds the optical path into a compact tube: the 1000 mm focal length remains portable and suits the Moon, bright planets, double stars, star clusters, nebulae and galaxies. The 114 mm aperture gathers enough light for many classic observing targets and makes a capable introduction to visual astronomy.

The EQ1 mount can be aligned with the celestial pole. Flexible slow-motion controls then let you make fine adjustments and track objects along the axes. Release the axis clamps for quick repositioning. The manufacturer also notes that the mount can be used in an alt-azimuth mode, which makes terrestrial targets easy to point at. A right-ascension motor is available as an optional accessory but is not included. The stated 3 kg visual payload is intended for the lightweight tube and supplied accessories.

The package includes a red-dot finder, 25 mm and 10 mm eyepieces, and a 2× Barlow lens. Calculated from the focal length, the eyepieces provide 40× and 100× magnification, or 80× and 200× with the Barlow. High-power image quality depends on atmospheric seeing, collimation and the target. An aluminium tripod with accessory tray completes the portable setup.
