Sky-Watcher Skymax 180 Pro: compact design, detailed views

The Skymax 180 Pro combines a 180 mm aperture with a 2,700 mm focal length. Its Maksutov-Cassegrain system folds the long optical path into a comparatively short tube. The f/15 optics are designed for high detail and are especially suited to observing the Moon, planets and close double stars; bright deep-sky objects can also be viewed.

Optics and observing

The long focal length provides high magnification with the supplied eyepieces. The closed catadioptric design keeps the tube compact despite its long effective focal length. The primary and secondary mirrors use the RAQ coating, specified to provide up to 94% reflectivity. High magnification also depends on a stable mount and steady atmospheric conditions.

Tube and equipment

Focusing is performed by moving the primary mirror with a precision focus knob. An integrated T2 connection allows a camera to be adapted. The 45 mm dovetail rail is designed for attachment to a suitable mount; a mount is not included with this item.
