OTA - optical tube
Maksutov OTAs: optical tubes without a mount
This category features Maksutov-Cassegrain optical tube assemblies without a GoTo mount or tripod. The range spans compact 90 mm models through high-aperture instruments up to 200 mm. Check each product for its mounting interface, tube weight and included accessories: an OTA is not a complete telescope mounting system.

Buying guide for Maksutov tubes without a mount
An OTA (Optical Tube Assembly) is the optical telescope tube supplied without a mount. This category includes Maksutov-Cassegrain optics from 90 to 200 mm aperture. Their folded optical path provides a long focal length in a relatively compact tube. They are especially well suited to the Moon, planets, double stars and compact celestial objects. Their field of view is comparatively narrow for very wide star fields.
Aperture, focal length and observing
Aperture affects light gathering and resolution. Larger instruments can reveal finer detail, but they weigh more and place greater demands on the mount. A long focal length makes high magnifications possible; useful magnification also depends on atmospheric seeing, thermal acclimatisation, focus and the eyepiece. After moving the telescope between different temperatures, the closed tube may need time to settle.
Choose a compatible mount
Compare the tube’s weight with the mount’s stated payload capacity. Allow for the eyepiece, camera, finder and other accessories as well. Check the attachment and balance: products may differ in dovetail rail, saddle standard and tripod thread. A camera tripod thread on a smaller tube does not by itself mean that a photographic tripod will be stable enough at high magnification. Use the product specifications and confirm compatibility with your mount.
Check exactly what is included
“OTA” means that the mount and tripod are not supplied. Accessories can still vary from one model to another: some tubes include only dust caps, while others also come with a finder, diagonal mirror, eyepieces, smartphone adapter or a model-specific filter. Refer to the individual product page for the exact contents and plan to source any missing components separately.
Eyepieces and image orientation
With the long focal length of a Maksutov, common eyepieces already provide medium to high magnification. A longer-focal-length eyepiece gives a wider true field and can make objects easier to locate; shorter eyepieces are more useful for high magnification when the air is steady. A standard 90-degree star diagonal gives an upright but laterally reversed image. For a correctly oriented view during terrestrial observing, use a compatible Amici prism unless it is already included with the telescope.
