SkyWatcher Stargate-400P SynScan Flextube GoTo Dobsonian Telescope

The SkyWatcher Stargate-400P SynScan FlexTube is a computerised Dobsonian telescope with a 406 mm aperture and parabolic primary mirror. According to the manufacturer, its aperture gathers 34.5% more light than a 300 mm telescope, making it suited to demanding visual observation of the Moon, planets and fainter deep-sky objects. With a 1650 mm focal length at f/4.1, the instrument also benefits from careful collimation and appropriate eyepiece selection.

The collapsible FlexTube truss design shortens for storage and transport and extends for observing. The tube measures 1500 mm when extended and 850 mm when collapsed. A three-point locking system secures the struts, and a fabric light shroud covers the open tube. The manufacturer states that setup takes less than 30 minutes. At 50 kg overall and shipped in three cartons, this is still a large, heavy telescope; plan for suitable storage and transport before choosing it.

The alt-azimuth GoTo mount slews to objects under motor control in altitude and azimuth. The included SynScan handset has a database of more than 42,900 objects; alternatively, built-in Wi-Fi enables control with the SynScan app for iOS or Android. Freedom-Find dual encoders allow manual movement while powered without losing the stored position. With power off and the clutches released, the telescope can also be used as a manual Dobsonian. This offers flexibility if you sometimes prefer to move the telescope yourself or do not need electronic tracking.

The dual-speed 2-inch Crayford focuser with 1.25-inch adapter provides fine focusing. The included 20 mm and 12.5 mm eyepieces give approximately 82.5x and 132x magnification; both are 70-degree wide-angle eyepieces. A collimation eyepiece helps align the Newtonian optics. The set also includes a 9x50 finder, light shroud and smartphone adapter. A direct DSLR connection is provided; suitable camera adapters may be required depending on the camera. The listed useful maximum magnification of 812x is a manufacturer figure; practical performance depends strongly on atmospheric conditions, collimation and the observing target.

This telescope combines high light-gathering capacity, GoTo convenience and the option of manual use for visual observers looking for a more substantial, less portable instrument. Consider the 50 kg total weight, three large shipping cartons and the need for a suitable power supply; a power supply is not listed among the included items.
